Directions:1. Cook the rice in a pot with boiling water, according to the instructions of the package. 2. Drain and keep warm. 3. In a non-stick cooking pot over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the flour, mix well and cook, stirring to make a roux. 4. Add the beef broth and simmer for 20 minutes over medium-low heat, stirring regularly until thickened. 5. Season with salt and pepper and keep warm. 6. If the sauce is not thick enough, add 1 teaspoon of cornstarch diluted in a little hot water and stir until thickened. 7. Mix the onion and the ground beef, then season with salt and pepper. 8. With your wet hands, form 4 hamburger patties. 9. Add 1 tablespoon of butter to a pan and melt on low heat. 10. Add the beef patties and cook covered, about 3 minutes on each side for rare steaks (or more according to taste). 11. Meanwhile, add 2 tablespoons of butter to a pan and fry the eggs for about 3 minutes. 12. Add rice to the center of each plate. 13. Place the hamburger patty on top. 14. Top with the gravy and finally place a fried egg on top of the steak. 15. Serve immediately. |

Notes: This falls under the “don’t knock it till you try it” category! Before we went to Hawaii I saw this was a popular dish there and wanted to try it on our trip. It sounded very strange, but people said it was good, so I thought I would give it a shot. It turns out I really enjoy it! David likes it too, and it is an easy and inexpensive meal to make.
