"A man who was fond of wine was offered some grapes at dessert after dinner. "Much obliged," said he, pushing the plate aside; "I am not accustomed to take my wine in pills."--Jean Antheleme Brillat-Savarin, The Physiology of Taste

Personal Notes:
This recipe is synonymous with the story of Becky and Jim's childhood attempt at making a chocolate cake and frosting. Here is Jim's version of the story: "I don't remember if the egg was supposed to be a part of the cake or the frosting. It wasn't until the frosting phase that we noticed the egg had not been implemented, and needed to be addressed. Not yet current on the basic standards of cooking, we cracked the raw egg onto the cake. With youthful determination, we tried to get the egg to disappear into the cake by spreading it around with a spatula. Our efforts proved unfruitful. Once Mom became aware that our attempt of putting a raw egg on top of an otherwise 'finished' cake, it was deemed unfit for human consumption and donated it to the slop-pail. Becky's future in baking would be highlighted by an oven fire (Jim's words, not mine)."
