*2 tbsp - kothu kadalai (kala chana or black chickpeas), soaked and cooked.
*1 - lime size ball tamarind

*To grind to paste:

1/4 tsp - black pepper
11/2 tsp - urad dal
1-2 - red chilies
pinch of asafoetida
2 tbsp - fresh shredded coconut

*1 tsp - mustard seeds
* a few curry leaves
*2 tsp - oil (Canola or peanut), divided
* salt - to taste

Directions:
*Soak the tamarind and extract 11/2 - 2 cups of water.
* Sauté the urad dal, black pepper, red chilies, and asafoetida in a teaspoon of oil. Grind these along with the coconut into a smooth paste.
*In a pan, heat the other teaspoon of oil and add the mustard seeds.
*After they pop, add the tamarind water, the cooked kothu kadalai, and the ground paste. Add curry leaves and salt.
*Let cook till raw smell disappears, about 10-12 minutes.

This is a recipe from my mother in law, Mrs. Rajalakshmi. When I wrote down this recipe while she was telling me, there were no set amounts, only ingredients. So the amounts are my best guesses. Please adjust according to your taste.
