Cream ¾ cup shortening, 1 cup brown sugar, ¼ cup molasses, and 1 egg until fluffy. Sift together 2 ¼ cups sifted all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons soda, ½ teaspoon salt, 1 tsp ground ginger, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon cloves; stir into molasses mixture.

Form in small balls, roll in granulated sugar; place 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 for 12 minutes.
