4 cups ham, diced
1 large ham bone, 1 ham shank, and/or 2 ham hocks, or combination of these.
2 cups carrots, chopped
2 cups onions, chopped
2 cups celery, chopped
1 cup navy beans, rinsed
1 cup medium barley, rinsed
8-10 cups water (or chicken broth)
2-3 tablespoons ham flavored soup base
Parsley for garnish
Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:
Place hambone, ham, onion, carrots, celery, barley, beans into a 6-quart slow cooker. Stir in 8-10 cups water or chicken broth and ham flavored soup base until well combined; season with salt and pepper, to taste.

Cover and cook on low heat for 7-8 hours or high heat for 3-4 hours. Remove and discard hambone.

Serve immediately, garnished with parsley, if desired.

Be sure to taste before adding salt because the ham is very salty. Usually I do not add salt at all.
