3/4 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
3 cups sifted flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
6 egg whites

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and add half the sugar gradually.

Cream until fluffy.

Sift together dry ingredients (flour, salt, baking powder).

Combine milk, water, and vanilla.

Add alternatively flour and milk mixtures into the egg mixture.

Blend well after each addition.

Beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add rest of sugar and beat until peaks round over gently.

Fold egg whites into batter.

Bake at 350 degrees about 25 minutes.
