Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 lb. Navy Beans
1 onion chopped
1 c. ketchup
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. dry mustard
4 strips cooked bacon in pieces ( I use 1 lb. for lots of bacon flavor!)
save some of the bacon grease

Directions:
Directions:
Wash navy beans, put in large pan & cover beans with water. Add onion, salt & pepper and bring to boil. Simmer 10 minutes. Add rest of ingredients, including the saved bacon grease.
Bake uncovered @ 325 for 4 to 5 hours. Keep checking, may need to add water after a couple of hours.
Some of the Schmidt Boys like their beans a little firm, have cooked them as little as 3 1/2 hours. Most people prefer beans softer, so keep checking till they are to your liking.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
These are the classic baked beans that are at every Schmidt Kettle Chicken cookout at Nancy's. Clifford loved these beans, so in honor of him, I made these beans for both our children's graduation parties, enough for 300 people. Clifford would have loved to have been there. These beans were also served at our wedding rehearsal dinner in 1979, along with Kettle Chicken, hosted by Clifford & Nancy at their farm.
